Event Time:

This is the main entry level course in the series of Sail Canada courses on sailing keelboats and on cruising. It develops the student’s ability to take command of and operate (with assistance of competent crew) an auxiliary powered sailing vessel, by day, in light to moderate conditions. Basic boating skills are developed under sail and power with a focus on operation of the vessel as both crew and skipper.

Taught in a day sailing or live-aboard format. The day sailing format is about 30 hours over 4 days, most of which is devoted to practical sessions on water. Live-aboard format is offered over 4 days or 2 weekends. Food is included for live-board.

No prerequisite for Basic Cruising but beginners should complete Start Keelboat Sailing. Students receive Basic Cruising book, Sail Canada Log Book signed by the instructor, registration with Sail Canada. Food is included with the live-aboard course and students will be sent a menu to choose from.

A challenge of the standard is offered in a minimum of 4 hours afloat plus completion of the 2 hour written examination aboard Blue Pearl or owner’s boat (pending successful safety inspection).
